Speed reading

I read incredibly fast. Probably not actually this fast, though, since this thing clocked me at over 2000 words per minute.

Joss Whedon would be a Good DM

Primarily discussing the Avengers movie. If you are one of the ten or so people left in America who hasn't seen it, mind the jump.

(no subject)

It looks like my paid account expired, but I don't post here so much lately so I guess I'm Ok with that! I wish I could alter which icons it deactivated, though. I was totally paying just for the icons. :)

The Wikipedia Blackout

Long opinion time.

I think Wikipedia is actually a pretty good encyclopedia. The purpose of an encyclopedia is to get a basic overview of knowledge on an unfamiliar topic, rather than to be a single primary source for research. Wikipedia is also useful in that it points to outside resources with more information about a topic at the bottom of every page. It certainly has its problems (lack of female contributors, biased priorities of the authors) but generally it works. If you want to quickly look up say the mass of a planet (or the episode list for a cartoon show) it's going to be reasonably accurate in providing that fact.

It shouldn't be your primary resource for a student paper. It shouldn't even be cited in a student paper. You're better off clicking the links on the bottom of each article that send you to more primary sources.

Wikipedia going black out today serves the purpose of spreading awareness about SOPA to people who may not otherwise be aware of the bill. Generally the coverage of this bill has been on tech sites, geek sites, etc, where it really is just preaching to the choir. But Wikipedia has a fair share of "regular joes" that access it who are now getting information about this act.

...Or are they? This is anecdotal, of course, but it seems like a lot of students (college in particular) are mad about Wikipedia being blacked out today, because they can't do their homework and stuff. Link: related. https://twitter.com/#!/herpderpedia

All of these bewildered, confused people could click the link Wikipedia provides explaining the law and the blackout. They would be able to clearly read that it is not gone forever, at least for now. Then, if they managed to read to the bottom, they could also see how to circumvent the blackout, if they really needed Wikipedia today. Maybe some people are doing this, and awareness is raising. In that case, the blackout is doing its job, and I'm going to assume that it is.

But the people being mocked here... They don't seem to be doing this. "I are confus, why wikipedia down? assholes they hate soap?" Reading is really hard, I guess, compared to tweeting. I don't know how you teach a person like that.

This is a good rant.

avatar help

Quick question I hope LJ can answer: looking for a link to a cartoon avatar creator I can use. There is one that makes a good head-on face I see a lot of people using, and I can't remember where I originally found it. But since I got my hair cut I really want to change my icon for most social networking stuff from something not an old photo...

It's about Magical Girls

This is my actually serious pitch for a Battle Fantasia Original Character Theme, that could lead to a large group of related magical girl characters, who will have magical girl adventures.

It is called PERFUME SPLASH )

Political

I don't usually get political here.

But today I am seeing this going around the internet: We stand with the 99 percent.

And I find it kind of annoying.

Some of the people posting to this blog are obviously teenagers. They're too young to really participate in the process, and whining on the internet about how they lack freedom is a fine teenage pastime.  So go right ahead.

But to the actual adults that are posting to this Tumblr: GET OFF YOUR ASS, ASSHOLES

You're the one percent, and you stand with the 99 percent?  Great.  GO AND STAND  WITH THE 99 PERCENT.

Stop posting to Tumblr and do something.  Do you want the government to redistribute your wealth? Give it to a reliable charity. You don't have to wait for the government to tell you where to give it.

Idle rich, got nothing to do this afternoon? Volunteer at a hospital, a soup kitchen, something.  If nothing else, go stand in the rain with the protesters.  You think that won't make a difference?  It'll probably make more of a difference than posting to Tumblr.

Is that too hard?  You can't pull it off because you haven't got the extra time, the money?  You can't do it because you've got to work at your job just to make ends meet and you've got kids and blah.  Maybe you're disabled.  Great: guess what, you're part of the 99 percent.  Don't post about being in "the one percent."

That or you really are part of the one percent, you have the means to effect change, but you're just lazy.  You want to post to Tumblr then feel good about changing the world with your digital camera instead of changing it with the money you claim to have. You're waiting for the government to tax you instead of deciding for yourself where you'd like that money to go.

SLACKTIVISM

Small, less angry edit: I understand that making these posts on the internet doesn't mean they also are not possibly doing something else.  So if they are, good on them; maybe you can tell and maybe you can't who is also donating to charity and who is just taking a photo and calling it a day.  And I know it's hypocritical to whine about activism on the internet by using the internet.  Sorry, it's just a rant; I don't intend to change the world with it.

New OC Concepts

Contemplating an OC group for Battle Fantasia of Magical Girls based entirely on Bath and Body Works scents.

The team leader is of course Japanese Cherry Blossom, but she occasionally has to fend off leadership challenges from Warm Vanilla Sugar.  Sun-Ripened Raspberry is the team's older member turned mentor.  Together they battle the evil forces of the Dark Kiss.

I may be completely serious about this.

Edit: Look, a list!  You have to love it.  Sweet Pea is the annoying little sister type.  Spiced Cider is the feisty one!  Paris Amour is obsessed with romance!  Pumpkin Caramel Latte is... too many flavors!
